Application Process

Applications are due each fall. An admissions committee meets to review the applications and recommends admission to the Graduate School. The application includes transcripts, three letters of recommendation, a statement of research interests, a CV, and optionally GRE test scores. Please review these general guidelines for graduate admissions provided by the Graduate School.

    Step 1

Prospective students should identify potential faculty advisors and reach out prior to applying. This is typically done as early as the summer prior to the application deadline. We recommend emailing the faculty advisor, providing a CV, and setting up a virtual meeting to discuss research opportunities in their lab. Consider following up to connect to students already in the lab, to learn about lab culture and graduate student life.

    Step 2

Develop your application materials. Reach out to letter writers (references) well in advance of the deadline, and provide them with the materials they need to write a strong letter. If you have questions about the application process, contact either the Graduate Program Coordinator, Emily Laabs, or the Director of Graduate Studies, Sean Schoville.

    Step 3

Submit your complete application by December 1st. The admissions committee will meet in the following weeks to make recommendations about student applicants. Students may be invited to visit campus in February. Notices of admission typically are made by late February.

    Step 4

Offer letters will detail the funding available for graduate study, which typically includes details about stipend support (RA or TA), tuition remission, and health insurance for admitted students. If a letter of offer is received, the deadline to accept that offer is around April 15th, as per the Council of Graduate Schools’ recommendations.
